The paddock glossary / useful distinctions
LEARN THE TERM.
CHECK THE CONTEXT.
Twelve starting definitions for club motorsport and circuit preparation. Rules, access and procedures come from the actual event, not the informal name.
- Paddock
- The event area where participants and support activity are based. Access and operational rules depend on the venue and event.
- Pit lane
- A controlled route beside the circuit used for entry, exit and pit activity. Follow the actual speed, access and movement rules in the briefing.
- Sign-on
- The organiser’s registration process for participants. Having a booking confirmation is not necessarily the same as completing it.
- Briefing
- The event’s explanation of procedures, signals and requirements. A website summary cannot replace attending or completing the required briefing.
- Sighting laps
- Introductory laps used under the organiser’s procedure to familiarise participants with the circuit and operational points.
- Session
- An allocated or described period of running. Its start, finish and purpose depend on the event format.
- Stint
- A period of continuous running by a driver or vehicle. The word alone does not prescribe a safe length.
- Sector
- A defined section of a circuit, often used in permitted timing or analysis. Sector boundaries depend on the layout and timing system.
- Elapsed-time delta
- Comparison time minus reference time. A negative delta means less elapsed time, not automatically better conditions or technique.
- Scrutineering
- An event technical-check process under the applicable regulations. It does not replace ongoing responsibility for condition or vehicle-specific preparation.
- Circuit race
- Competition with multiple cars sharing a circuit under the race rules. It is different from a non-competitive track day.
- Sprint / hill climb
- Timed-course competition disciplines. A hill climb uses an uphill course; consult each discipline’s official requirements rather than treating them as ordinary track days.
